In
an effort to stop internet gambling, Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was passed.
The
main thrust of the law was to prevent credit card companies (MasterCard, Visa, etc.) and other payment transfer companies
( PayPal, Western Union, etc.) from transferring money
from a United States resident to an offshore online
betting organization.
Fortunately, lawmakers
DID NOT
make it illegal for an individual
to place a bet on the internet!
An overview of the ‘Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006
shows
that ‘mere participation by bettors in online wagering’ IS NOT ILLEGAL!
Personally,
I think that when people are getting laid off in record numbers and folks like ‘Bernard Madoff’ are stealing millions of dollars, it would be a shame for anyone to be prosecuted for trying to make
some extra money by betting sports online.
